For exactly this reason. It also allows your dimmer tech to power down right after the show while you turn disks out @ FoH before packing up.

There is no UPS backup on any of the Hog consoles. The only one that has a battery is the full Hog-3 console, and this only allows for a very brief run-time so the console can protect the showfile and auto power down in case of a power failure.

I have a good one for you. An extra a couple weeks ago unplugged the stinger that was powering up my UPS to plug in her cell phone charger. We were in the middle of shooting. That's why I use a UPS. I get kick outs or stupid mistakes like that from time to time.

We also run UPS's on our DP2000 if they are away from the console such as in the dimmer sheds.

Since we are on the topic of UPS.... When I power up my UPS it has that 7 second or so time when it's starting up(the LED flashes green and finally goes solid green and you here a click). During that time i get a bad buzzing sound that comes from inside my Hog(Full Size Hog 3). It almost sounds like it's over volting the power supply. I thought it was my UPS so I thru it away and bought a new one and the new one does the same thing.

It's a scary sound so most of the time i unplug the console when powering up the UPS. Has anyone else ever heard this? Do you think it's bad for the console?

This is actually a self test of the UPS itself, to make sure the battery, and inverter are functional. This is completely normal. It is simple a load test simulating a full load on battery. The unit will make the same sound if it is powered on with a full load, and the utility power goes out (basically the ups at full load on an inverter, and battery).

I am all for a UPS, the unit is a PC OS, so if you lose instant power, just think what happens to the hard drive. Make sure it has redundant power, to ensure the risk of a "dirty shutdown"

I'm not worried about the sound from the UPS itself. The scary electric over volting sound comes from inside my console. I'm guessing from the power supply because it's right behind where you plug in the power cable. I think I will throw a True RMS meter on it one of these days to see what the UPS is actully putting out at that time of start up.

Some cheap UPSs put out square wave, or stepped square wave AC when they are running on battery, rather than a proper sine wave. I can't speak about any specific models, but in general sine wave is better than square wave output.

You can use an external UPS on the HogIII if you want to. The internal battery is primarily intended to give the console enough time to save your showfile and shut down cleanly.

Of course, all UPSs (including the Hog III's battery) have a dirty little secret: The batteries only last about 2 or 3 years. If your UPS is older than that, and you haven't changed the batteries, they will hold a small fraction of its original charge. Fortunately, most UPSs make it relatively easy to change batteries.

I personally do not recommend the APC units....I have had several HUGE failures with them (one even caught on fire!).
Go with the MGE ones.....I find them to be much better overall.

Well guys, My console has arrived and is very very shiny. I will be looking at getting a UPS down the road, Any suggestions?

I use an APC and have had no problems. The only thing I don't like about the APC is the loud beeping during a power failure. Maybe all UPSs are like this? Does anyone know of any UPS that doesnt beep in power failure?

I realize the purpose of the beeping during power failure but the only reason I use the UPS is in event the power was to drop for only a second or so. It would take the IPC a few minutes to boot back up even though the power was off for only a few seconds.
