Timecode shows

I have my timecode training scheduled soon. I have been looking at the manual section on both sound and timecode. I plan to be making mulitple revisions of the show to disc so I want to use the WHIII line in and out ports on the rear of the console instead of a music CD in the disc tray.

So instead of having my music on a disc and controlling the disc drive, I would like to use My IPOD. I assume this is possible because the console has line in and out.

Instead of having my IPOD permenently plugged into the console I was wondering whether I could copy the desired music files from the IPOD to the consoles hard drive, then use them from there...

Does anybody have any experiance with timecode and the WHIII. I will probably only ever use MIDI (click tracks), SMPTE and CD from the console. Any tips or tricks? Anything I should look out for?

You can't put other information on the hard drive of the console.

If you're using the III, then you need an LTC Widget in order to do SMPTE. You can use MIDI Timecode and come in the Midi ports.

Generally, the easiest way is to take your music and put track on left and timecode on right (or vice versa since you're on the other side of the pond :) ) get a stereo split and convert the timecode to MIDI timecode (unless you have a LTC Widget).

The old I/OP can do LTC as well....but they stopped making them a while back.

Don't underestimate Midi Timecode Jo. You can get an awful lot done this way!

I have used an ipod before with the LTC widget. What I did was put the song as a mono mixdown on the "L" channel and the timecode 'audio' signal on the "R" channel. It worked really well and had no problems. The "R" audio cable just plugs into the LTC widget and its all good to go.

You just need the timcode signal track and a basic audio editing program (like audacity) to make your tracks. I haven't tried midi before but this has been good enough for me (when I don't have an actual source). The times I have had an actual source have always been from the video guys. I have always had realy good luck getting time code from a Grass Valley Turbo iDDR (you just need to convert BNC to XLR).

Same here....

I have a 30min SMPTE track in my itunes. I can drag it into an editting program real quick and split l/r and be done with it.

Old thread I know...but I am working on some SMPTE stuff next week and want to get a head start....anyway I have the LTC widget and my hog 3 and I got the track on an iPod but what cable to I need to connect the widget to my iPod? Any help would be very appreciated thanks...

So...I'm assuming you have your SMPTE track on your iPod then? I ended up making my own cable. Basically you want a 3.5mm TRS (1/8" or mini) connector to 2 male 3 pin XLR connectors. That way you can have the Left channel go to the audio guys and the right channel to your widget.

thanks for the quick response matt I really appreciate it...so I have basically that but I have it to one XLR connector that goes to my widget and the TRS connector goes to the iPod? But it doesn't seem to be working? Is that because I need only the right channel and it is somehow feeding both left and right to me? Also I'm not positive if the LTC widget it being seen by my board on the back the only thing lit up is link? Does that seem right?

I should also say that the track is definitely coded for SMPTE it has the song on the right and the timecode on the left I just listened to it...

I see what you have...you have a Balanced TRS to XLR adapter. So you could try one thing first. Switch the timecode to the Left Channel. If that works, then there's nothing else you'll need to do. Otherwise, if you need to keep it in the right channel, then you'll need to make your own adapter, or rewire the one you have.

Does the widget show up in the console? If it doesn't be sure to assign your timecode source as the widget. Once this is all setup properly, you should be able to view the timecode coming into the console.

Is the Timecode supposed to be on the right channel? So even if I got the Y cable you suggested would it still possibly be wired wrong?

Also as for the widget is it supposed to show up in my network window where I see the board and dp2000? In the midi setup I am able to select LTC from the drop down menu although I was able to select that even when I didn't have the widget hooked up an I was just testing things with a CD. Sorry for a million questions I really appreciate the help you are helping me big time.

So now I bought the Y cable like that one you posted and I still have nothing...for some reason I feel like the board might not be seeing the widget? Even though I am able to select LTC as my timecode source....I don't get it I feel like I am missing something...

Make sure you have enough gain on the Smpte source. It's real finicky about the level. too loud or too soft and it won't see it or drop frames.

-12db seems to be the magic number for me.

Also when playing back from an ipod or laptop, make sure your volume is all the way up! Its scary when you forget.
