I have a studio spot that the pan feels weak. Such as when it is on its side it will not home correctly, there is very little resistance to move it. The tilt started to act the same way. I tried swapping power supplies thinking it could be weak since it is both pan and tilt. Same results. I tried swapping logic boards (the logic board was marked as good but who knows). Now its just the pan doing it again. Any ideas?
Make sure that there are no broken leads on the motor connectors at either the motor or the logic card. An open phase on a stepper will act this way as well. And an open phase will not affect how the motor feels when you turn it . . .
I have checked the leads and made sure that they were plugged in tight. I am having the same problem, it does it only when its panning slowly it begins to drop back down. I guess i will buy a new set of 3 phase chips and give that a try. I guess i will also try swapping motors.

Plugged in tight is one thing, but have you checked them with a meter to be sure that there might not be one that is open? Also, considering that the pan and tilt use the same chips, you should be able to just swap one and see if it makes any difference.
should i just pull off the wiring harness on both sides and check with a meter, or i guess i could bring a scope over to the shop and look for the pulses sent to the motor.

I think reading them with a meter would be a good starting point . . .
according to the meter all is well with the wiring. I tried swapping the pan and tilt plugs on the board, besides the fixture absolutely hating me, it felt like the pan was still weak and the tilt was fine. They didnt even try moving though, they just threw an error of pan fail/tilt fail.
sounds stupid but I had the same thing on my tilt and it was the belt! it was bad but not broke? so when it was upside down it slipped, but when it was upright it acted fine.
ok after lots of frustration, and swapping the logic board, chips, power supplies, and the cable, it came down to the stepper motor. I replaced it and it worked fine. Go figure.
