Fixture Select

How would you tell it or how would it know what fixture you want? I might have more than one fixture in that pallet.

I was primarily thinking about position pallettes - let's say I create a specific focus with 10 lights, having the ability to select from the pallette would mean that I wouldn't need to create a group for those lights as well- I only grab the lights I need, with their relevant data.

[position X] open [position X] load all fixtures of position X with palette values

[position X] open does load the palette in a new editor-window.
Currently, if you have stuff in your programmer and have a palette "drums" with the position of only 4 spots of your rig, you first need to select these 4 spots and then press the palette-button.
We are looking for an easier way, i.e. double-clicking on a palette selects the group of fixtures and sets them the the palette value (position X)
I usually have groups for my positions in the same layout as the positions, so first group in the first row of the window is the group that has position values in the first position in the first row. This is annoying and when you exchange lamps in your positions you always have to update the groups, too.
A double-click sound good. Or maybe hold down GROUP and press the palette on the touchscreen?

Group + palette put all in programmer
Position + palette put just position in programmer if you have multi features palette (do the same with color ......)
Postion + choose put position values of active cue in programmer (do the same with color ......)
group + Scene palette put all in programmer ......

You can also try....

Position [x] Copy Enter to load the Palette into the programmer.

Then just sneak the fixtures up with your I-Wheel, (or your encoder if you are stuck with an iPC):)

Well I know a lot of programmers set their upper left-hand trackball button to be "Select All" in both pointer and position modes.

If you do this you can use Position [x] Copy Enter, and tap that trackball button on the way over to the I-Wheel.

This of course is a work-around solution. I do like the double-tap idea....as pressing Group first might bring the Group window forward to cover your Position window depending on how you have your windows and user prefs set up.

And a double-click or hold some button and click on the palette would just be the fastest way... no need to select a group before or hit 3 or 4 buttons and the touchscreen...

Another work-around solution is to record Intensity values into your Palette via masking, set your default time under user prefs to suit your show, and make sure fade changes is selected in your programmer window.

Then Copy the Palette into the programmer. Values should be sent in their default times.:)

This also becomes further complicated with global palettes... but let the discussion continue so we can see where this goes.

i don't think that it need to have special fonction with global palette. It's a way to select palette witch have special values for each fixtures saved inside.
Theres two way to use it with global palettes, first it do nothing, second it select all fixtures, could be a fast way to put all in red....

I like this concept very much...very nice shortcuts!
Though, I guess Group + pallette should be fixture selection... or maybe Fixture + pallette...

Some of you maybe know GMA has fixture selection in palettes. First press selection, second activates preset...I personally don't like it...

:friday: OK...so here's how I do it currently. I have been working with Hog-3 in varying "on-the-fly" scenarios at the venue I work at nearly every day for the last year.

I build either a scene or a cuelist that has only Position stored in it. I have intensity for those fixtures in another list on a handle.

I keep my culist directory window open and de-select guard. When I want a specific focus, I simply touch that cuelist or scene...and the lights all move there. When I don't want them there anymore I release the list (Try "Add Release End Cue" under options) and the lights go back to wherever they are in the master show list or any other list with Position in it.(provided you have selected "Persist On Override" for that list). Or you can simply re-"Assert" your master show list. Or you can simply select another one of your position lists.

Setting your fade and release times is helpful. Or you can build another series of cuelists or scenes that change have different Speed values (M-Speed in the case of HES fixtures is called "Global Time" on Hog-3 under BEAM).

So I guess the question really is, do we need to change how Palettes work? Palettes are supposed to be the building blocks for cues....not the cues themselves.;)

I think if you get creative in your construction of cuelists and scenes...which ones live on screen and which ones live on faders/handles you can do all of what you are asking for.:)

BTW - having Position lists/scenes is a great way to change the base point of FX if you build your FX lists/scenes w/o position in them...just FX table, etc.:)

I don't think that we need to change how Palettes work, just add shortcuts.
