Where an audience will view digital light output at a fairly wide angle (like a theatre) the material of the screen being projected on to can affect "percieved" brightness.

For Da-Lite Screen Company
Useful screens for front projection:

Matte White
The most versatile screen surface and the premier choice when ambient light is controllable. It evenly distributes light over a wide viewing area while colors remain bright and life-like, with no shifts in hue. Screen surface can be cleaned with mild soap and water. Flame retardant and mildew resistant.

Viewing Angle: 50°
Gain: 1.0

High Contrast Matte White

Designed for moderate output DLP and LCD projectors, this screen surface is a great choice when video images are the main source of information being projected and where ambient light is moderately controlled. With its specially designed gray base material and reflective top surface, this screen material is able to provide very good black levels without sacrificing the white level output. Screen surface can be cleaned with mild soap and water. Flame retardant and mildew resistant.

Viewing Angle: 45°

For Draper Screen Company
Fiberglass Matte White — The standard to which all other screen surfaces are compared. Matt white vinyl reflective surface laminated to tear-resistant woven fiberglass. Recommended for use with all high light output projection devices. Requires control of ambient light in the audience area. Washable, flame and mildew resistant. Now available seamless in all standard sizes through 8' high. Gain Chart
Care and Maintenance: Clean surface with a solution of mild dishwashing liquid diluted with warm water. Sponge the surface; rinse with clear water and blot dry. Do not use cleaning solvents or abrasives.

High Gain screens have one disadvantage - the higher the gain, the narrower the viewing angle. You need to bear that in mind.
