Do you need to run echo while using showpix?

I'm flying down to Austin TX to help a friend out at his church install wholehog3pcs and 4 showpixs. I'm just wondering is the echo software changing the graphics or is wholehog?
Then if the echo software is running it do I need a seperate computer and single universe widgets for all 4?

    The Showpix fixtures are DMX controlled and keep all of their media (graphics and animations) internally. You can control them entirely from the Hog3 software.

    You only need to use Echo when you want to install custom content on to the Showpix fixtures. Echo can take common media files, convert to the Showpix format, and install them on the fixtures. This is typically done long before the show opens. Echo does not need to be running during the show.
