DP4000 + Hog III PC

It would be nice to have a 4 dmx output 8 artnet output processor for those circumstances were the dp8000 is just overkill. I often think about just taking a couple of widgets and an extra laptop because the show only needs a universes. Maybe even a dp4000 that has only 1 dmx out but allows you to have 8 artnet outs.

Rather than a new processor, or a new piece of hardware, I would like to see ArtNet outputs enabled from a PC system (via the PCs ethernet port) equal to the number of widet outputs attached, up to say a maximum of 4.

So if you have a single widget attached, you could then output a single universe of ArtNet.

If a Super-Widget is attached you get 4 ArtNet universes, etc....

Seems this would be easier to do than engineer a whole new piece of gear.

That is something I asked for a long time ago. I can see lots of situations where this would be helpful.

Having the ability to assign HogNet or ArtNet to a specific network adapter would be critical for this, especially if you have only one "jacked" network adapter on your machine (which most do). You could potentially add additional adapters via USB (or similar) to have both networks if you need them.

We're talking about H3PC here....iPC would be a whole different story, yes it runs embedded Windows, but it is still not quite the same.

Add to that, that manufacturing of iPCs has been over for a while now, I doubt that a hardware development would occur for them.....hard to say for sure though.

I have always meant that in addition to what marty talks about(unlocking art net universes according to connected dmx widgets) we should unlock universes via art net when wings are connected also. as an example 2 universes pr. wing.. It´s years since I mentioned this the first time, and it is only getting more and more important in my opinion.
-Take for instance the new wing for MA2.. price vs functionality/connectivity is so much better than anything in the wing/widgets category from HES, that the wings/widgets pricing looks almost silly.

I would be interested in a Widget that was just an artnet output to use along side my super widget.

I think a reasonable cap would be 8 universes. If you need more you should have a DP8000. I think this is reasonable because it is also the cap of universes you can get out of a pc system or an IPC with super widgets.

Glad to see that people have opinion's on this topic.
I suppose the actual configurations of Art-net universes required will vary from
user to user but my initial thoughts were for the option to be available to begin with
and then for the specifics to be discussed.
As with with all software changes it would take time but IMHO a simple low price point option/change would be a great addition,even an option that had a single artnet universe that was limited in time so you could test Hog III PC would be a start so users could decide themselves over a limitied time period.

I agree with you Cormac, giving users even just a single ArtNet universe would be nice, but it will probably have to be with HES/FPS hardware since the software is free already. Hence single widget might equal additional single ArtNet universe.

I see where you are going Lee, but if that happens then there is no motivation to go to a DP-8000 which should really be handling a system of 16 universes, as many smaller PC systems (netbooks, tablets, etc...) might choke with that kind of processing load during "big" cues.

Just to clarify, I would think that the ArtNet universes are available in addition to the connected Widget ouputs.....not instead of. That's why I'm thinking a maximum of either 2 or 4 ArtNet universes, since a user would already be able to get an additional 8 via widgets. If you need more than that, then it's time to step up to a proper DP-8000.

Marty I see your point. I was thinking that they would be either or and not in addition to dmx outs. If you did use a widget to get an artnet out it would output the same universe as the widget. I think my biggest issue is that there is no possibility for artnet output unless you are using a dp8000 or full boar.

Agreed i think 1 universe of Artnet is more than enough.
I'm not going to link to any other console manufacturers directly but to the best of my knowledge Compulite,GLP & Chamysys offer free software that outputs Artnet directly at no cost.
Every company is different so i can't comment and would not have the information on how this reduces or increase sales of actual widgets/processors/consoles but all i do know is that in Europe Chamsys has taken a huge market share of the live touring Market over the last few years.
Again i don't makes consoles or create software so my knowledge on the positive and negative sides of implementing big changes is very limited but the real question is do you give out software with limited functional ability for free or not? and if you don't will people go to where the software is free and does work instead.
