My workaround is quicker that pressing backspace a million times. Hold [Shift] and [left arrow]. That will quickly select all text and then you can over type.

It's already been fixed for the forthcoming 3.2 software. It will no longer drop keypresses when backspacing quickly. This has long been a pet peeve of mine, I'm thrilled to see it gone!
