Showbeam Twin beam effect?

Hey all,

I am teaching a class on Lighting and I wanted to talk about the SHOWBEAM to the students. Can anyone explain how the Twin Beam effect is done? Does the lens split or it a mirror involved? I know they are going to ask, and I haven't had the opportunity to look inside a showbeam myself.

There is a lenticular prism inside the unit with the surface points in the shape of isosceles triangles.

The lens also "splits" to give a more beam definition, but does not actually split the beam in any way.
