Try to Record an "off" effect in the effect directory for the relevant parmeter. Use this when stopping an effect so you select the "off cyan" to stop any effects using the cyan wheel. This is the cleanest way of stopping an effect in a cuelist.
While I agree with this being the best way to stop an effect, it may not be the ideal. If you have a position effect and then set the effect of pan and tilt to off the fixture will return to its last static position- in most cases the 50/50. If you want the fixtures to have a certain look when they finish the effect, you can cheat a look and fade the effect out into the static position.
