\"a red light is on, visible from the front of the G5\", Catalyst playback is slowed
Recently I've received a few calls from Catalyst users reporting a red light that comes on which is visible from the front of the G5. This is the same red light that is visible when the internal air deflector (clear plastic) is removed while the machine is running.
If that light stays on, or comes on with the air deflector in place, inspect the tabs of the air deflector to see if the air deflector sensor label has worn away (it is installed on one tab by default). Thus far, in all cases reported to me, this has been the cause of the red light visible through the front of the G5 - the missing or worn tab makes the G5 think the air deflector is not in place, even though it is. If the air deflector is not detected by the G5, “the computer will run at a reduced speed” per Apple’s support site.
For more info see:
1) http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86412 mentions that if the air deflector is not detected, the computer will run at a reduced speed
2) http://www.info.apple.com/usen/cip/pdf/g5/073-0891.pdf describes how to replace the air deflector sensor label
A new air deflector sensor label can be obtained as a replacement part. Contact an Apple authorized repair center for more information.
